Easy on surrounding streets Price range: You know what I love?
I love when people say to me, "That restaurant is so good the last thing it needs is a review from you. I'm all for that, because though I admit a bad review can put a dent in profits, not enough people in the restaurant business acknowledge the fact that a good review can help.
So here's to the people who notice. That said, the last thing this week's restaurant needs is a tuck shop business plan from me, primarily because it's already tough enough to get a table there. It took me four tries, and after this review, it's going to be close to impossible.
Yeah, you guessed it, I liked Tuck Shop Located in the heart of St.
Henri, which, let's face it, is nowheresville when it comes to fine dining, Tuck Shop has great ambience, better-than-expected food, and service that defines the word solicitous. From the outside, the retro-verging-oncartoonish sign tells you nothing about the scene within.
Actually, it does tell you one thing: And it was a nice sort of middle-aged anglo crowd, so appealing in fact, that an especially handsome fiftysomething my guess, an architect, because he had an iPhone flirted with my mid-fortysomething sister, and that alone tells you just how fun and comfortable a place this is.
I cannot deny, at times, it's great to be with my "peeps" for all you non-hipsters, that's short for people. The decor consists of white subway-tiled walls, funky chandeliers, a long banquette, a seat bar at the front, a four-seat bar at the back, a few tables for larger groups by the window, and a tiny open kitchen at the end of the room.
The restaurant is so petite that the bathrooms are literally in the middle of the floor plan. Yet with only 46 seats, Tuck Shop is hopping. The atmosphere reminds me quite a bit of the Monkland Tavern where Bloom worked as manager. Same goes for the style of food, which would be best described as a mix of French bistro, Italian and American comfort-food fare, listed on a menu that I'm told changes up to three times a week.
Yet Tuck Shop seems a tad fancier, as demonstrated by our first starter, a duck trio consisting of duck rillettes, duck prosciutto and pan-seared duck foie gras. I liked the little flavour enhancers like the accompanying mix of chopped apple and hazelnuts, but the foie gras was on the mushy side, the prosciutto was on the salty side and the fried rillettes were on the greasy side.
Happily, every dish that followed was great. A curry-tinged squash soup was piping hot and velvety, and tasted as good as it sounds. After taking a few slurps, I said I thought it would be better with a couple of grilled shrimp on top, but my dining companion was right when she accused me of lily-gilding.
I also enjoyed the jerk chicken.
Generous in portion, the more-tangy-than-spicey bird was paired with fried okra and an abundance of cilantro underneath. Each element tasted alone was good, but the three tastes together really soared.Business Plan Template This business plan template is a great tool for your startup to customize to reflect your strong qualifications, experienced team, and marketable business idea.
